Hello world!

Yeah, I said it. I'm wasting a programming degree, sue me.

Howdy all! This is the introductory post, so I guess I’ll tell you a little about myself and what I’m doing here.

My name is J. Weaver. Yes, I actually go by J. I was born in midwestern America, grew up in the southeast, and now call the northeast home. I’m happily married, and my wife and I have an appropriate number of cats, thank you very much. I’ve done all kinds of jobs over the years, and I like to think it’s made me a more well-rounded person.

I like video games and listening to audiobooks. I grew up loving to read but I’ve found even greater enjoyment from listening to books. My biggest inspirations as a writer are J.R.R. Tolkein, Robert Jordan, and Brandon Sanderson.

My favorite part of writing is the worldbuilding, though I admit sometimes it gets in the way of, y’know, actually writing the story. I love creating worlds, making them increasingly more intricate as I mix and match pieces to see what fits. Sometimes, making a small change to a single part of the world has a cascade effect on the rest of the world, shaking things up, but more often than not it actually solves problems I’d been trying to fix.

Sure, I’m the author and could just wave my hand and say “it’s this way because I say it is”, but it’s so much more satisfying when I can make it make sense, when I can set some ground rules and build a cohesive world and plot while following those rules.

Once I get started talking about something I enjoy, whether it be Final Fantasy or one of the worlds I’ve created, I tend to ramble on and on, but hey, isn’t that why you’re here?

As for a brief overview of The Redsong Saga, it’s about a young aspiring bard named Saga Rose who stumbles upon an ancient evil during her graduation trial and gets swept up in a conflict that’s lasted over a century. Saga is a drake, a special human born with dragon horns and enhanced magical and physical prowess, and she also happens to be the eldest child of the Craftking of Beacon’s Ridge, her home city. She’s always dreamt of being a hero like in the stories, always wanted to be recognized for what she does, rather than who or what she is. She’s got confidence in her skills, but she finds herself wondering: what does it really mean to be a hero, and is that really what she wants to be remembered for?

Along the way she’ll be joined by a (hopefully) entertaining cast of characters:
-Dapper, her childhood friend who happens to be a beatweaver, a spider monster with magical silk and an impeccable sense of rhythm.
-Arty, her other childhood friend who happens to be a mage, a human boy with magical magic and no sense of rhythm.
-Gem, a singing bard and fellow drake.
-Epic, Saga’s protective younger brother.
-Ferris, the cowardly monster hunter.
-And more to come!

I’ll share more details about the world in future updates, though I’ll try not to spoil planned story elements. In the meantime, if you’re reading this, thank you for your time, and I hope you enjoy what’s to come!
